چکیده

While mitral stenosis is still frequently encountered despite the large decline in the incidence of acute rheumatism, combined mitral stenosis and aortic stenosis is less common. The recognition of the existence of aortic stenosis in association with mitral stenosis is important, as both can be dealt with successfully at one operation. If the aortic lesion goes undetected and mitral valvotomy alone is performed, the results may sometimes prove disastrous (Ross, 1959). Honey (1961) recently reviewed the clinical and hemodynamic features of 35 patients with this combination, 32 of whom were operated on. The present series comprises 15 patients seen at Mearnskirk Hospital between November 1957 and January 1962, all of whom underwent surgical treatment. The symptoms and clinical features ofcombined aortic and mitral stenosis are compared with. those of isolated aortic stenosis. A further five had mitral stenosis with an aortic systolic murmur but the aortic gradient at operation was regarded as insignificant.

Combined mitral and aortic valve stenosis caused by two different etiologies, rheumatic and congenital.

Described herein are five patients who had double left-sided cardiac valve replacement for mitral and aortic valve stenosis resulting from two different etiologies: rheumatic heart disease, the cause of the mitral stenosis, and congenital heart disease (bicuspid valve), the underlying cause of the aortic stenosis.

OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of transvalvar flow rate on aortic valve resistance and valve area after percutaneous transvenous balloon dilatation of the mitral valve in a homogeneous group of patients with rheumatic heart disease. DESIGN Retrospective analysis of 12 patients with combined aortic and mitral stenosis who had undergone balloon dilatation of the mitral valve over a perio...

Combined Mitral and Aortic Stenosis.

Rheumatic fever commonly affects both the mitral and aortic valves, and in a significant proportion of patients with rheumatic heart disease the physical findings of both mitral and aortic stenosis are present. Detailed evaluation, however, will usually reveal that only one of the lesions is of hemodynamic importance and responsible for the patient's disability. Less commonly, left heart cathet...
